ORIGINS OF THE UNIVERSE

Instrumentation: Alto Flute/Flute, English Horn/Oboe, Bass Clarinet, French Horn, Bassoon

Duration: 8 min. 15 sec.

Year Composed: 2015

More like this: Cosmology for Woodwind Quintet, Soliloquy for Pierrot Ensemble

Origins of the Universe unfolds in small building blocks. It develops gradually from solo, to unison, to polyphony, as if the instruments are discovering how to share their voices for the first time. The music begins as an asymmetric, but metered melody, which slowly shifts into harmony and polyrhythms. At the midway point, the instruments discover individuality, each developing his or her own musical character and sense of time. They overlap each other's melodies in the slow but chaotic senza misura section, until the instruments regroup, unfolding backwards in time. The musicians finish by performing the first section as a retrograde, cut only by a brief moment of organization, before dismantling back into unison, and then solo.
